Proposal

5th graders

Topics: Light, motion, sound, energy.

Students will be assigned a group to work with and a topic for your group. Within your group you are to first explore your topic and learn the basics. Some questions you should be able to answer are: What is light/motion/sound/energy? How does this relate to what we are learning in class? Are there different types of this thing and if so what are they? Please do not only answer these questions, these are only a starting point.

After exploring in science class with your group, we will all go on a field trip to the Great Lakes Science Center. Here there are many exhibits and each of your topics are explained at one of these. You must take notes at the exhibit that displays your topic. Once we get back to school you and your group members are to create a 3D presentation on your topic.

1. The first Web 2.0 App I looked at was Soshiku. This is an application designed for the teacher to post assignments, notes and due dates.
2. The next Web 2.0 App was Engrade. This is an application where teachers can post their students grade online and the student and parent can see what their grade is in each individual course.
3. Quizlet was the third app that I looked at. This is a website where you can post online quizzes for the students to take. This will help them learn new material and give the teacher a better understanding if they are catching on to what is being taught.
4. The fourth app I used was Letterpop. With this app teachers can maintain communication with parents. This will help keep parents up to date with what is taking place in the classroom.
5. ToonDoo is the final app that I used. This is an online education game website. Students can go to this website and play games online that are educational and useful to topics that are being taught in class.

After reading the article Prensky, M. (2007) How to Teach With Technology -- keeping both teachers and students comfortable in an era of exponential change. BECTA's Emerging Technologies for Learning, Vol 2, I do not understand why teachers would not want to adopt this technology and incorporate it into their lesson plans and teaching. Technology such as, cell phones and computers are the new way of life nowadays, so why keep our children from learning how to use them? I feel that incorporating this technology into teaching would really benefit the students. The world is changing its time for the ways of teaching to change too!

I chose to interview a 5th grade teacher back from home. She said that she would be interested in a section where she could communicate with her students parents such as a newsletter, an assignment section where she could post assignments and an online grade book where students could check on their grades throughout the grading period.

Web Log #3

The 2.0 application that would help me would be an application based on assignments, such as blackboard. That way I could look back and read over my assignments and work ahead if wanted. My goals are to learning how to better my teaching skills throughout this course and be able to take new skills learned with me to my own classroom one day. In order to learn I need hand on activities and must study in order to receive a good grade.

Web Log #1

1. Name, hometown, primary email.
My name is Karlee Robinson and I am from Willoughby, Ohio. My primary email is krobinson13@jcu.edu.

2. What name do you prefer to be called?
I prefer to be called Karlee.

3. Grade level and subject(s) that you want to teach (For graduate students: undergraduate and graduate degree(s), education license(s), current employment: grade level, subject(s) if applicable, district).
I would like to teach fifth grade math and science.

4. What are you into; what makes you special? Share a few “unique” aspects about yourself that would help our classroom community get to know you a bit better.
I am a cheerleader, here at John Carroll. I come from a family of five and have two younger siblings, a sister named Mackenzie and a brother named Ben.

Learning Style and more: 5. Being as specific as you can, what must be in place for you to feel comfortable taking intellectual and creative risks in a classroom?
In order to feel comfortable and be willing to take intellectual and creative risks in a classroom I must feel like I am in a warm, welcoming environment.

6. I am interested in your perception of yourself as a student. Please describe it. Consider such criteria as a) active oral class participation; b) responsible, timely class preparation (of readings, projects, etc.); c) honest, candid self-assessment; d) awareness of your own preferred learning styles/approaches; e) first thing that you do when you cannot or do not understand something; f)other dimensions you believe to be relevant and informative.

I actively participate in class discussions. I feel that I am a very responsible student and am always on time for class with my homework done. I know that I learn best with hands on activities and note taking. I also go to a professors office hours or find a classmate in my class to help me when I do not understand an assignment or topic in class.

7. Is there anything I should know about you, your learning style, or life situation that may be relevant to your successful performance in this course? (Please decide what to share with the class and what to share in confidence with me).

I learn best with hand on activities.

Technology Section
8. What do you believe was the most important technological invention in history? Why?

I believe the computer was the most important technological invention in history because it is useful in so many ways. You can use it to communicate with friends and family, research answers, write papers, take notes and even shop on!

9. Please list a number of technologies you currently believe to be essential to your life. Star (*) those you (tend to) believe to be insufficiently promoted in education.

Cell phone*

Computer*

Television

Game systems

10. In relation to technology, please describe what life is like for you after a typical school day?

Usually after a typical school day the first thing I do is log onto my facebook and check my email.

11. Indicate any uses of technology that you believe tend to be inappropriate or used excessively (by children in or out of school, by teachers in or out of school ) or promoted excessively (by the media, the computer industry, schools), i.e. ones that should be restricted or regulated in key ways.

I believe that television and game systems should be regulated.

12. Let’s imagine, humbly, that this course is definitely going to be the most meaningful and relevant educational technology course you’ve ever experienced. EVER. Drawing on your past experience in classrooms, and thinking uniquely, specifically and BIG, describe what we need to (1) DO (activities/projects), (2) STUDY (content topics and compelling issues/questions), (3) BE (interacting with each other) and (4) AVOID (in the previous three categories) in order for your visionary views of an ideal course to be mostly realized.

I feel like we need to learn how to use and apply technology to everyday teaching, study ways to promote technology and use it to students advantages in the classrooms and be open minded to other peoples ideas and thoughts.

About Dr. Shutkin: 13. Write down two or three questions you would like to ask me about myself or the class.

What grade levels and subjects have you taught?

Do you have any kids?
